Featuring Handmade Pillow Puppets and Fairy Rag Ladies

Our handmade working string puppets are "outsider art:" unrelated objects and media, brought together with imagination into new forms and functions. Each piece is unique and is signed by the artist.

Fairy Rag Ladies

Just like you, each Fairy Rag Lady is a unique creation, and no two are ever alike. They're about 18 inches tall, with papier maché. heads and hands. They're dressed in their best with ribbons, satin, and costume jewelry, and with ribbons as control strings. Order one of these by name (but once she's adopted by someone, she's no longer available), or have one created just for you -- specify whether you want a peach or nutmeg-colored face. They're appropriate for an older child, or as a collectible. Hand-made, and signed by the artist. Click on the thumbnail to see a larger picture, or to order. $39.95 includes shipping and handling.

Pillow Puppets

When the little ones are ready for bed, dance them into their dreams with a handmade pillow puppet, already dressed for bed in seasonal long johns! They come in cocoa with black yarn hair, black bead eyes, and pink mouths, or in cream with antique gold yarn hair, red mouths, and tuquoise or lavender bead eyes. About 24 inches tall, with yarn control strings that can be untied so that the child can sleep with the pillow puppet. Click on the thumbnail for a larger view, or to order. $29.95 including shipping and handling.

Custom Orders

I welcome custom orders. If you'd like a particular facial/hand color, hair color, eye color, etc., just let me know! Email me at rriverstone@webtv.net to discuss what you'd like.

Ideas... If your child has favorite pajamas that are now outgrown, I can make them into a custom pillow puppet. If you have an old dress that has special meaning (for example, a bridesmaid's dress), it can be new again as the dress for a Fairy Rag Lady. If it has sentimental value, don't throw it away -- let me turn it into a family treasure for you.

Note: Pillow puppets are recommended for children who are past the age of putting everything in their mouths (the eyes and string connections are buttons that could be pulled off and swallowed). The Fairy Bag Ladies are not recommended for unsupervised play by very young children, as they contain small objects which are easy to swallow, and their armatures are made of stiff wire and wooden dowels.

p.s.: I have a lousy camera. All puppets are much cuter in person than their pics!

there are dolls and doll body parts
all over the living room.

In the middle of it all are cats,
playing like kids in piles of leaves,
leaping over and burrowing under
piles of stuffing and fabrics.
to pounce on a passer by.

The dog sculked off and hid on my bed and won't come back out.

I'm finding loot:
stolen buttons,
needle-threaders,
beads,
yarn balls
and, yes, even straight pins
--trophies liberated by the cats--
in the most obscure corners of my apartment.

This morning, I found a puff of stuffing by their food dish.
Last night, I found a scrap of fabric in my bed.
The pin cushion was behind the toilet.
And a doll arm was all the way back in the guest bedroom, on the sofa there.

I thought I was making puppets to sell.
Turns out, what I've really done is:
I've invented Disneyland For Cats.
Only thing missing is the mouse.....
